It’s official… Summer is coming to a close this month.

Despite all our efforts, warm temperatures and the patio/rooftops/beaches that accompany them will soon wither away along with the leaves. But with that, football, school and all-things pumpkin spice return! So it’s not all bad, right?

To properly send off summer and ring in the return of fall, we’ve once again gathered some of the top days across the month of September to bring together your residents and apartment communities for some events they’ll want to attend (and ways to use your custom mobile apps to help!)

And as always, be sure to check out our full calendar of resident event ideas in the link below - and check back each month, as we post new ideas and full calendars throughout the year!

September 3: Labor Day

Did you know the history of Labor Day dates all the way back to the late 19th century? As the time’s trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor - thus the creation of a day dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.

These days, Labor Day consists of BBQs and pool days in the twilight of summer. Using your Mobile Doorman resident app, encourage residents to use the in-app amenity reservation feature to reserve grills, or remind the community how many days remain for pool-time. And, of course, you can use It to wish residents a happy (and safe) time celebrating the holiday weekend!

September 6: Read a Book Day

While the world continues to move towards digital & mobile tech, it’s hard to refute the tactile pleasures that reading a paperback book brings. To celebrate this year’s Read a Book Day, organize a book swap in your community’s common area, allowing for residents to drop of their favorite book(s) for others at the property to enjoy, and in the process pick up a new novel they might enjoy. Using the reservation function in your app, you can also set up reservation parameters for residents to reserve specific books for certain amounts of time to keep a full record of the day’s swap session.

September 13: Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day

Not a day most have likely heard of, September 13 is reserved each year for kids around the world to get their hands dirty and help mom or dad in the kitchen. This year, take the opportunity to invite a local chef to the community for a cooking demonstration with the emphasis on recipes that kids can help out with. Or, if you have a shared cooking space large enough, encourage your visiting chef to invite kids attending the demonstration to get involved with the process by helping cook the evening’s entree.

September 25: National Voter Registration Day

Endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and supported by the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), National Voter Registration Day is a national holiday celebrating our democracy by ensuring that Americans are registered to make their voices heard come election time. Using this trusty link, you can find & share your local registration event with residents this September 25 - or better yet, sign up to sponsor an event!

September 29: International Coffee Day

I think we can all agree, there’s little better than enjoying a nice hot drink as the temperatures fall. This September 29, fill your community’s communal space with the sweet smell of roasted coffee beans by offering residents free coffee all Saturday morning. Looking for something more engaging? Encourage coffee-lovers at your building to compete with each other for who has the best coffee by hosting a java taste testing competition in the lobby of your community - allowing for residents to taste and rate their favorite local brews.
